The past month or so we have been preparing the feed lot for weaning. Fences needed to be fixed, mangers cleaned and a new line of water troughs put in. It has been a lot of work.
We use large tractor tires for water troughs. The pipes run from one to another under ground.
The pipe has to be at least 3 1/2 feet deep to not freeze in the winter.
Cement is poured around the outside of the tire and in the middle to keep it in place and to seal up the inside.
This usually works quite well, but we have had a few issues with one trough that has required repeating the procedure and fixing leaks.
Everyone helps get the feedlot ready for the calves.
