Last Sunday we took a break and climbed Mt Wheeler. It is quite a hike. The peak is at an elevation of over 13,000 feet.
Ryan was home, so he joined us. He was a much faster hiker than we were.
It was a beautiful hike. Until that last 1000 feet or so. That was a bit of a struggle.
There were even some turkeys on the trail.. Native to the mountain? haha, I don't think so.
Looking down on Stella Lake.
Ryan waiting for the old farts again.
It started to get steep. Ryan kept getting further and further ahead.
Looking down into Spring Valley. The last hike we took was in the mountains on the other side.
Ryan still getting further away.
So close, yet so far.
Getting there.. There isn't much air at that altitude. And what there was I think Ryan used it all before we got there.
Brown Lake, I think.
Ryan is at the top wondering if we will ever make it. He got there about a half hour ahead of us. As Dave says, "there is no substitution for youth".
Yay! We made it. 13,063 feet. woofta..
Wow, what a view.
This picture shows how I really felt. haha
Not bad for two old farts. And remember, Dave had a hip replacement just last summer.
Dave was wanting to continue on over to the next mountain and down Baker Creek. We told him he was CRAZY!!
We had to celebrate with a summit beer. We ate lunch and headed back down.
It was steep going down also. But it didn't take us nearly as long. We were clear up there. Amazing!
We took a short rest by Stella Lake.
It had been close to 20 years since we had made this hike. We hope to not wait that long to do it again.
