BEAUTIFUL SATURDAY

Yesterday was Saturday, but that doesn't mean a day off on the ranch.  We were up early and getting things done.  The sunrise in Baker seems to never lets us down.  It is so beautiful.
We saddled up our horses and headed to Strawberry Creek Ranch to wean a few more calves that finally made their way off the mountain.
The colors were magnificent.  I was distracted a little by them.

There is a reason these cows are stragglers,  They run and try to hide when we are anywhere near them.
We followed them down to the corrals where we would be able to separate the cows and calves.  The cows ran most of the way there and into the coral with a little direction from us.
There were only 7 calves, so we loaded them up in the old horse trailer to take them home.
In the pictures below is an old stage stop on the Silver Creek Rd.
In the afternoon we headed to the Davies Ranch to move cows into a different pasture.  I love the old buildings around there.  I try to imagine life back in those days.
We let KC the corgi come because it was just a short job... haha.  She, Lucy, and Clay's dog, Cali, really enjoyed themselves and KC even got to swim a little.
The cows were anxious for us to open the gate.  They were all lined up at the fence.
At both places we were at today were old hay derricks.  They used to be used to stack the hay.
The farmers would hook up a team of horses to the lower end, and a big fork was on the other end. The horses would pull and raise the loaded hay, pivot around and stack the hay.  At least that is how it was explained to me.  I would like to step back in time and watch it in action.
Someone had time for a siesta while waiting for Dave and myself to come back from the other side of the pasture.  We had to put out some of the neighbors cows that were visiting and we had to travel at corgi speed.
We fixed the fence, at least a temporary fix, where the neighbors cows came through.  The fence is in need of serious help.  There is always work to be done.
On the way home we stopped and looked at an old cemetery.  There is so much history around us.

I just love the picture of the cows with Wheeler Peak in the background. Looking at all you do on the ranch makes me EXHAUSTED. And I love the old buildings down at Ladd's old place…. and the explanation about how they stacked hay with those old "whatcha ma call its". Thanks, Tana, for this interesting glimpse into real ranch life.
