DUSTY TRAIL

We headed out with the South herd today.  It was a nice day, but rather dusty.
The cows trailed out pretty well once we got them started out of the fields.
Cowboys love their dogs.  I watched the dogs work today.  They were doing all the work after all.

Don't let all the dust and brown color fool you.  There is a lot of feed out on the desert, especially this year.

For example the picture above is white sage (winterfat). It is an excellent source of winter feed.  It is high in protein .  The different grasses were abundant also, like curly grass (galleta) and indian rice grass.  There are several types of plants that make up the winter feed. The cows like it and do very well on it.
Above is some globe mallow.  It usually blooms only in early spring.  This late bloom indicates that we have had an unusually wet summer.

How to protect yourself from the dust.
The cows got tired, but they kept on trucking until they reached the water tubs.  It was a little warm for the cows today.

Another beautiful day on the ranch.

loved they pics and what an education, amazing how you knew all the names of all the desert plants, I am totally impressed! Other than the dust looked pretty good to me, lots of dogs, and all breeds it looks like, but they were all there to work. Again a wonderful ride with you, loved it.
