GATHERING MUSTANGS

Today we went to our South Range where the BLM was conducting a wild horse gather.  We watched as the helicopter chased the horses to the corals they had set up.  It was pretty amazing.  I did not take the above picture I found it on the BLM web site, but it is of horses gathered in the same area.  My pictures are not nearly that good.  I forgot my camera, and as usual only had my phone.
We watched them set up the corals and, burlap runway, I'll call it.

The horse out there is a domestic horse being held by a person. It is called a Judas horse.  When the wild horses get close it is let lose and leads them into the corral,  I wondered where the holder person went when he let it lose. They said he just lays down on the ground.  I thought they were kidding, but nope that is what he did.. Yikes.

Here they are coming in and the stud breaks out.  There were two other studs still out and when they went to bring them in this stud went and warned them about the trap I think, because they would not come in. It is amazing how far and long these mustangs can run.  When we left they still hadn't succeeded in capturing the stud horses.

See the person on the ground? That's nuts..

They loaded these ones up in a trailer and headed back out to try to get the others. I will have to find out later how it ended up.
These horse looked really good. They have done well feeding off of our range.
The wild horse thing is somewhat controversial.  The fact is that the numbers are just too high. The horses are harming the range and the population just has to be controlled.  These horses will be put into an adoption program with the BLM.
There is no doubt that they are beautiful amazing animals.

Would have loved to watch this event, sort of mixed feelings, as I know they are too many and eat what cattle need, but yet they are amazing critters and beautiful! I hope they get good homes, did see one colt, again want good homes for them all! Thanks for sharing and telling thier and your story, very educational.

Another great blog on whats happening in your backyard. With my training from State government for 21 years I could be the guy that lays down on the ground when the horses thunder on by!!
